Understanding how music is constructed can enhance the experience of playing or listening to music. For many students it is an essential element in their music education. The ABRSM places such importance on the understanding of music theory that students wishing to take Grade 6 on their instrument need to have passed Grade 5 theory first.
For students whose teachers prefer to concentrate on instrumental skills in the lessons, ad hoc lessons in the theory of music can be arranged with a theory teacher.
